Indigo Flameworks

Mark and Kelly Payne began their partnership of creating jewelry out of glass and metal in 1995, in Durango, Colorado. Kelly’s background education in fine art and jewelry design, combined with Mark’s extensive skills in metalworking and jewelry fabrication allowed for a natural creative partnership.

 Kelly designs and produces the visually-rich enamelwork. After years of exploring and creating in the medium of glass, she became more and more drawn to working with vitreous enamel. Her earlier work consisted primarily of firing enamels and vitreous paints between layers of glass. The luminosity and layers of color held endless fascination and possibilities — never to be exhausted. She then discovered the joy of firing the enamels onto textured metals. The magical fusion of glass onto metal opened up a new path of creativity. She taught herself the enameling process mostly through experimentation, and from reading books and articles by many of the great enamellists of our time: such as Kenneth Bates, Margaret Seeler, and Fred Ball. She continues to be inspired by the vision and work of many contemporary enamellists: such as Merry-lee Rae, Rebekah Laskin, Falcher Fusager, and most of all — the late Marilyn Druin. She is currently a member of Enamel Guild West, Creative Glass Guild, and self representing jewelry artists.

Mark creates the final framework for the enamel works of art. He designs and meticulously handcrafts contemporary settings out of silver, gold, and other exotic metals. He loves creating the textures in metal that can be seen through the colored layers of transparent enamel and the flowing design of wirework for their Cloisonne’ pieces. He then selects unusual cabochons and faceted gemstones to accentuate each piece. He is continually working to further refine his craft; constantly seeking further knowledge and skill. Some of his role-models include: Blaine Lewis, Tim McCreight, Sam Alfano, and master wax carver, Kate Wolf.

Mark and Kelly have spent many years creating together, and continue to evolve the design and craftsmanship of their work. They exhibit at over 25 juried fine art shows per year throughout the southwest. Their home and studio are located in the Mohave Desert, nestled in the foothills, about 17 miles outside of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. This peaceful and serene setting is the perfect place to decompress from the hectic schedule of art shows, and regain focus, inspiration and clarity, which is reflected in their work.
